One thing I've learned about being a college student that lives two hours away from home is that it's hard. Especially when you have tiny siblings at home. I just got off the phone with my brother and he was heart broken when I had to hang up.
I constantly see pictures of the twins on Facebook. They're a year old and rapidly growing and changing every day. I missed first steps, first words, a lot of their firsts. I wasn't able to be there on their actual first birthday.
Sounds terrible, I agree.
But another thing I've learned is that I'm in a huge role of influence for these guys. My parents never went to college, or at least didn't finish. I could very well have been the deciding factor between them going or not going to college. What would've happened if I stayed at home?
One) I wouldn't have my own income. Which means I couldn't spoil the little brats like I can now. And I love it.
Two) College is important if you want to get anywhere in this world. Simple as that.
Three) What kind of role model would I be if I was just sleeping in late every day, always online, never doing anything but being lazy. Never taking initiative.
Don't get me wrong, I will always miss home. Some days I just want to go home and watch movies with my parents late at night, or watch the twins run around like the maniacs they are, or listen to my brother's crazy stories, or eat my grandma's cooking, or hear my grandpa laugh.
But I always remind myself that I am doing what's best for me and my future, and maybe even doing what's best for my siblings' futures.
I'm sorry if this post is a little scatter brained. I suppose if I want you to take anything out of this post, it would be this:
Cherish every moment with your family, enjoy having them down the stairs or down the hall or across the yard, because one day they won't be.
